Discipline Hopping Award
Dr Katie Brittain has been awarded an EPSRC Discipline Hopping Award entitled, “Ageing in place’ and the impact of emerging technologies on the lives of older people,” which will allow her to work closely with SiDE . The award will support and enable Katie, a social gerontologist, to explore the relationship between assistive technologies, pervasive computing and place attachment for older people inside and outside of the home. Katie will develop her interest in social gerontology alongside technology development and the opportunity to access a broad base of disciplinary knowledge and expertise, both locally through the ‘digital economies’ research led by Professor Patrick Olivier and internationally through two planned placements in the USA. The focus will be on collaboratively exploring the connections between the home as a site of assistive and emerging technologies, access to the wider community and place attachment from different disciplinary backgrounds, particularly social gerontology and computing science.
