Professor Patrick Olivier

Patrick leads the Connected Home & Community activity on SiDE. His research ranges from the development and deployment of experience-centered and participatory design methods to the development of tangible and embedded interaction techniques and technologies and pervasive computing applications. 

Nils Hammerla

Nils is a PhD student funded by the Newcastle University's School of Computing Science to work within SiDE's Connected Community activity. 

Daniel Roggen

Daniel is a research associate working in the Connected Home and Community activity area of the project.

He received his M.S. in microengineering in 2000 from the EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He then worked for the company VisioWave (now belonging to General Electrics) in the optimization of wavelet-based video compression algorithms for video surveillance on Intel Itanium and IA-32 architectures, as well as various other video processing algorithms.

Thomas Ploetz

Thomas is an expert and post-doctoral researcher in machine learning and applied statistical pattern recognition. On SiDE he takes responsibility for activity recognition research within the Connected Home and Community activity. Thomas is currently funded the DFG (German Science Foundation) to work with Gregory Abowd at Georgia Tech, USA. 

Sebastian Stein

Sebastian is a PhD student funded by SiDE to research multi-modal activity recognition within the Connected Home and Community activity.

Anja Thieme

Anja is a PhD student supervised by Thomas Meyer (Institute of Neuroscience), Patrick Olivier (Computing Science) and Peter Wright (Computing Science).

Dr Abigail Durrant

I'm currently working as a Senior Research Associate at Newcastle University, for SiDE. Current work includes exploring the potential of photography at school to support children with additional needs in interpersonal communication, and how the design of photographic equipment could enhance this.

Paul Dunphy

My research interests centre around usable privacy and security mechanisms & with particular focus on security, usability, deployability and user experience

Jon Hook

I'm a Research Associate (on the SiDE project) and PhD student at Newcastle University in the School of Computing Science working with Patrick Olivier. For my thesis project I am looking how technology relates to expression in human-computer interaction.

Selina Sutton

Selina is a Research Assistant within the Connected Home and Community group and a newly-qualified Speech and Language Therapist. She is currently involved in a number of projects investigating the role of digital technologies in supporting and improving health and wellbeing.
