Research Themes

Our research is organised into four main themes: Connected Home & Community; Accessibility; Transport; and Creative Industries

Connected Home & Community

Our vision of the connected home is one in which digital technologies underpin the care, autonomy and continued social integration of older and vulnerable people. Under this theme we plan to explore how digital technologies can support help people with cognitive impairments, and their carers, maintain their autonomy; and how older people living alone can be better connected with their extended families.
Other themes: Accessibility; Transport; Creative Industries

Accessibility

Our vision of the Digital Economy is of a socially inclusive infrastructure that enables easy and effective access to the media, web-based social networks for older people, and access to a full range of digital services (including commercial, financial, health and well being, transport, and leisure activities). The accessibility programme of research will explore the usability of the Digital Economy for older and disabled users, together with the need for appropriate special services for these individuals.

Transport

Our vision of the future of transport is one in which the Digital Economy provides a framework for the delivery transport solutions tailored to younger, older and disabled people. By exploring new digital transport technologies and services our goal is to provide access to a rich resource of personalised traveller information services for pedestrians, private car and public transport users.

Creative industries

Our vision of digital music is one in which people have access to creative tools, and the means of distributing content, on everyday technology platforms such as mobile phones. By furnishing younger people with both creative and commercial tools we see digital music creation as both the source of new skills and a compelling cultural activity to engage socially excluded younger people.
