SiDE Society lead, Ranald Richardson presented work on "Planning for information and communications networks: new spaces for local intervention in the neo-liberal state?" at the recent conference hosted by the International Geographical Union Commission on the Geography of Global Information Society - Heritage, Planning and eParticipation: The Evolving Forms of Information Society, Athens, July 3-6, 2011.

Ranald Richardson Social Science CO-I on SiDE and Principal Research Associate in CURDS, together with Hilary Talbot, from the Centre for Rural Economy, presented the findings of recent research and on changing policy and practice in relation to broadband networks and rural economic and social development. This research explores the potential roles of local authorities and community broadband organisations in delivering the Coalition’s broadband roll out agenda. In a presentation to the plenary Ranald drew on almost 20 years of research in the field of Information Society to place recent developments in a historical context, illustrating both continuity and change. He outlined the key challenges faced by local actors and put forward a ‘model’ for intervention.

The social science researchers at SiDE have had two abstracts accepted for the Regional Studies Association’s Annual Conference which will take place at Newcastle University 17-20 April 2011. Ranald Richardson, Graeme Mearns and Liz Robson will all present their papers at the conference.

Ranald Richardson was appointed as a reviewer on Promoting Cross-Disciplinary Research: Engineering and Physical Sciences and Economic and Social Sciences, which was held in Swindon 26.1.11

Oonagh McGee, Graeme Mearns and Angela Abbott attended the Public Engagement in the Social Sciences event at the Centre for Life. This event was facilitated by the Beacons for public engagement and jointly hosted by Newcastle University and Durham University. Attendees were given the opportunity to engage in discussions with researchers currently working in the field of public engagement and were provided with examples of how engagement can work within the field of social sciences. The presentations included examples from a broad range of disciplines including transport, language and literature studies. Public engagement is at the heart of SiDE’s research aims and researchers actively engage with the public in a number of the research initiatives across the project including the Creative team’s work with the Regional Youth Work Unit, the Accessibility research with users in Dundee and Transport’s Elderly Driver study.

SiDE’s Society team attended the Transforming Social Care through IT conmference in London. The conference brought together policy leaders, best practice examples and industry experts to discuss the challenges facing social care providers and IT support teams.

1st SiDE internal workshop

The 1st SiDE internal workshop allowed all researchers to get together and swap ideas around a series of interactive sessions aimed at collaborative problem solving.

Ongoing work within all the activities and perspectives was presented and explored from a multidisciplinary perspective and a follow up workshop with a focus on “Users” was planned to be held in Dundee on 10-11 Jan 2011.
