  • Culture Led Regeneration - Ranald Richardson presented a paper entitled “Culture-Led Regeneration, Creative Practice and Digital Technology: Enrolling the ‘digital natives’”, at the Regional Studies Association’s Annual Conference in Newcastle upon Tyne 18th-20th April 2011.

  • Newcastle Council for Voluntary Service advise on Community Engagement - Stephanie Cole and Louise McGlen from Newcastle Council for Voluntary service (NCVS) delivered an interactive session as part of the SiDE seminar series.

  • Situating communities through creative technologies and practices -

  • Regional Youth Work Unit - SiDE is working with the Regional Youth Work Unit - North East, a registered charity which works across the North of East of England to promote and support the development of youth work, to explore ways in which creative practices around digital technologies can complement their work with young people in the region.

  • Shaping the future of ICT research - Graeme Mearns was one of thirty-eight early career researchers invited to the EPSRC’s ‘Future Leaders in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)’ workshop hosted at Warwick University, February 16-17th 2011.

  • SiDE awarded AHRC ‘Connected Communities’ grant - The “Connected Communities” team which incorporates the Creative Media and Social Science researchers on SiDE, was awarded the AHRC’s Connected Communities Scoping Study (£40,000).

  • Internet Safety and Young People report published - The question of ‘online’ safety has received widespread coverage in the media, prompting the North East’s Regional Youth Work Unit (RYWU) to look into the benefits of being online and young people’s safety.

  • Digitally Mediated Futures - Angela Abbott presented a paper entitled “Informal Care Economies and Self-Directed Support in Tyne and Wear: Digitally Mediated Futures?” at the Regional Studies Association's annual conference.

  • Creative Uses of ICT in Connected Communities: A Scoping Study - SiDE Creative Industries researchers presented at this year's Digital Economy All Hands conference: Digital Engagement.

  • Angela Abbott's PhD success - Angela Abbott, Research Associate in SiDE Society strand, successfully defended her thesis in July 2011, and has been awarded a PhD, subject to minor revisions.
