Newcastle Council for Voluntary Service advise on Community Engagement
Stephanie Cole and Louise McGlen from Newcastle Council for Voluntary service (NCVS) delivered an interactive session as part of the SiDE seminar series. NCVA support voluntary and community action in Newcastle by working with voluntary and community organisations/groups through three areas: supporting and developing networking and involving representing and influencing They highlighted how research projects can engage with community and voluntary organisations and highlighted some of the barriers to engagement including; lack of time,not relevant to group’s work, non reciprocal relationship,concerns about ethics especially when vulnerable people are involved,structure and language used not user-friendly and general consultation fatigue. They also gave details of the organisations within the region that SiDE could engage with. The session afforded the SiDE team to gain an insight into community and voluntary working and a number of follow up meetings have been arranged to enable further relationships to develop.
